Regarding natural options, one example I can share is me going to acupuncture to help with some bursitis, which isn’t a covered treatment. But I was covered for a prescription medicine ($20 copay) which gave me liver failure! I’m sticking to the natural stuff. As for CR v. NY, we’re actually in the process of making our primary residence Jax, FL. We’ll keep the NY place for now as our daughter uses it, and we plan to visit NY for holidays and such. CR is a place we’ll go 1-3 months out of the year but it’s a vacation rental the other time.

Also, do you remember if the surgeon gave him the option on what kind of procedure he could have? Yes, it is interesting when you look into the detail at the difference in payment from Medicaid (state), Medicare, to private insurance for the EXACT same service. There is a lot of cross-subsidizing going on to offset the low rates the government plans pay. In theory, insurance is often approved when negotiating a lower rate because their “network” is driving patients to certain providers.

It’s particularly hard in NYC where so many hospital systems have merged. Each system seems to be aligned with a preferred insurance provider, and depending on what insurance you have they quote prices or refer you to services in line with the insurance, not your preferences or objectives. I like to do things as naturally as possible — diet, acupuncture, etc — and none of these treatments are covered, which is a whole other problem!
